Lip Enhancement Information
What are Dermal Lip Fillers? Dermal lip fillers are injectable treatments designed to enhance the shape, volume, and structure of your lips. The fillers typically contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture and add fullness to the skin. When administered by a qualified practitioner, lip fillers are a safe and effective way to achieve fuller, well-defined lips.
Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and safest to have administer by doctor, dentist, or nurse with prescribing qualifications, following a face-to-face consultation and assessment.
How Do Lip Fillers Work? Hyaluronic acid fillers work by adding volume to the lip area, which can create a more defined shape and enhance overall fullness. The product integrates with the tissues in your lips, attracting water and providing a plumping effect. The amount of filler used can be tailored to your individual preferences, whether you are looking for subtle enhancement or more noticeable volume.
Does it Hurt? Most patients find lip filler treatment to be tolerable. A fine needle or cannula is used for injections, and many fillers contain a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) to minimise discomfort. If you are particularly sensitive or anxious about the treatment, a numbing cream may also be applied before the procedure to make you more comfortable.
Uses of Lip Fillers Lip fillers can be used to:
Add volume to thin lips
Define the lip shape and border
Create symmetry between the upper and lower lips
Smooth vertical lip lines (also known as "lipstick lines")
Enhance the overall balance and proportion of the face
The treatment plan will be personalised to your desired outcome, and your practitioner will discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Before Treatment It’s essential to inform your practitioner of any medications or supplements you are taking, as certain substances may increase the risk of bruising or impact the filler’s effectiveness. Supplements such as Vitamins A, C, or E, Gingko Biloba, garlic, fish oils, St. John's Wort, and blood-thinning medications like aspirin or ibuprofen can increase your risk of bruising. You may be advised to stop taking them a few days before your treatment.
Additionally, it’s recommended to avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to your procedure, as this can also increase bruising.
Make-up should be removed before the injections, and you will be advised not to reapply it for at least 12 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of infection at the injection sites.
After Treatment Following your treatment, it is normal to experience some swelling, redness, and mild bruising at the injection sites. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. Applying ice to the treated area can help reduce swelling and bruising.
For the first 24-48 hours after your treatment, you should:
Avoid excessive heat or cold (e.g., saunas or ice baths)
Refrain from vigorous exercise
Avoid touching or massaging the treated area
Stay hydrated
It is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner to ensure optimal results.
How Long Will it Last? The effects of lip fillers typically last between 6 to 12 months, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors such as your metabolism. Over time, the body naturally breaks down the filler. Regular maintenance treatments can help you achieve long-lasting results, and your practitioner will advise you on the ideal schedule for touch-ups.
Are There Any Side Effects? Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites. These effects are usually mild and resolve within a few days. In rare cases, complications such as infection, lumps, or asymmetry may occur.
